Why Does High-Intensity-Interval-Training work so much better than old-fashioned cardio?

Forget about how many calories the cardio machines tell you that you are burning from your workout. The real measure of the exercise benefit is in how many calories your body burns AFTER the training is done!

In this chart, you see the results of a scientific study which measured the energy expenditure (calorie burning) during and after a HIIT workout vs. a regular effort workout (like jogging at a steady pace).

It’s Hard to Eat Right in the Wrong Kitchen

There’s no place like home for getting healthy; that is, if it’s organized and filled with things that nourish your well-being. But far too often, the place where we live is part of the problem. When it’s a cluttered mess, with a kitchen filled with sugary, processed, high calorie foods, it interferes with our efforts to eat healthy.

That’s why one of the first things I do when I begin working with someone new is meet them at their home to do what I call a ‘Healthy Spaces Makeover.’ I start in the kitchen by opening up the cabinets and refrigerator and I take a photo of each. Then I get out a hefty trash bag and I go to work. Out goes the half-eaten box of sugary cereal, the leftover potato chips, cookies, Pop Tarts, sodas, ice cream and such. Everything that’s packed with empty calories and practically devoid of essential nutrients must go.

Then, it’s off to the grocery store to stock up on fresh fruits and vegetables, brown rice, oatmeal, lean sources of protein like salmon, chicken, eggs, protein powder, light yogurt and low-fat cottage cheese, as well as plenty of pure water.

Transform Your Kitchen from Fat to Fit

Then it’s back to the kitchen where we put these new items in the cabinets and refrigerator. Then I take another photo and I paste it, as well as the photo taken before, on a sheet of paper. The before and after comparison is often very dramatic — like the difference between night and day. In just a matter of a few short hours, we change the kitchen from a health hazard to a vibrant source of nutritional energy. I tape the sheet of paper with both photos on a cabinet near the refrigerator so the person has a crystal-clear example of how I need that kitchen to look from this point forward. I suggest that you do this action step too — especially if you want to achieve your goals and be a winner in the Transformation Challenge! =)

The Biggest Loser’s Biggest Lies

In the wide, wide world of ridiculous diet and weight loss BS, The Biggest Loser’s ‘weekly’ weigh-ins take the cake. If you’re familiar with the TV show then you know it’s not uncommon to see the contestants lose 12 to 20 lbs a week from their exercise and diet efforts. The first time I saw this, I couldn’t believe it. I’ve been researching, practicing, teaching and writing about health, weight-loss, and fitness for over 25 years and I’ve never seen weight come off that fast. It’s something that I get countless, continuous questions about, from my students, clients, and even doctors.

“How on earth are The Biggest Loser participants losing so much weight so fast?” That’s the question that is so often asked. As it turns out, the answer is: “They aren’t.” Let me explain…

You might be surprised to discover that there is a closely guarded secret to those sensational results. You see, a week on The Biggest Loser TV show does not equal a week on the calendar you and I follow. In this case, there’s a big difference between ‘reality TV’ and what’s real. Former contestants have revealed that the length of time between ‘weekly’ weigh-ins can be as much as 25 days, which makes it look like people are losing weight a lot faster than they actually are.

Andrew ‘Cosi’ Costello is one of the former Biggest Loser contestants who has spoken out. He explains, “In my series, a weekly weigh-in was NEVER filmed after just one week of working out. In fact, the gap between one weigh-in to the next was up to three and a half weeks. That’s 25 days between weigh-ins, not 7. I had to stand on the scale and was asked to say the line, ‘WOW, it’s a great result… I’ve worked really hard this week!’ The producers made sure that we never gave the secret away because if we did it created a nightmare for them in editing. The shortest gap from weigh-in to weigh-in during my series was 16 days. That’s a fact.”

How does the show get away with something so deceptive and misleading? Simple… it is a fictional TV show and despite the fact that it fits into this new category of ‘reality’ programming, it is not at all required to present factual information. It’s not a documentary; it’s not a news broadcast; it’s not really real.

Kai Hibbard was a Biggest Loser Finalist in Season 3. She recalls, “The meaning of a ‘week’ on The Biggest Loser varied. It could mean 14 days.” Kai goes on to explain that the way the show was edited made it appear that she was losing 12 lbs a week but she says, “Sue me if you want to, NBC, but I’m telling people I didn’t lose 12 lbs in a week. It didn’t happen. After the show aired I’ve had people come up to me crying, telling me how hard they workout and how strict they are with their food and they want to know why they can’t lose 12 lbs a week. I have to explain that it wasn’t a week. And even when it looks like I lost 12 lbs in a week… I was so severely dehydrated at the weigh-ins that it was completely unhealthy.”

Make no mistake, I am always inspired and excited to see people making healthy changes in their lives. Losing weight, overcoming unhealthy habits, starting with and sticking to an intense exercise program… I know from firsthand experience, it’s a lot of work and requires determination, effort, and courage. I commend the participants in these shows for making the bold decision to make a change and for the inner strength that they put into being successful. I have nothing but respect for each and every one of these Biggest Loser contestants. (I think they should be called ‘Winners’ by the way.)

The problem is NOT with the people featured on the show. The problem is
the system behind the scenes. The producers, not medical experts, control how the show goes during taping, editing, and what is packaged and delivered to the networks. The producers’ job is to deliver a program that the TV networks can promote and broadcast to draw big ratings from. The TV networks job is to attract the most viewers possible to maximize the advertisers’ financial investment. That’s simply how the entertainment business works.

Unfortunately, millions of viewers who watch shows like The Biggest Loser are unaware that what they are seeing is at least in part, make believe. If I hadn’t worked in the industry myself (producing documentary films, videos, TV specials) I would probably take what I see on these shows at face value also. But, through my experience, and hearing from TV weight loss show contestants themselves, I know that there’s some very misleading, and even dangerous information being presented.

As I see it, the unrealistic and untrue depiction of exaggerated weight-loss results on shows like The Biggest Loser is creating a big problem. These shows, which have the potential to do so much good, are ultimately doing a disservice to their viewers by misleading them.

What I do like about TV shows like The Biggest Loser is that it brings attention to the incredible ability we each have to make stunning changes in our bodies and lives. This gets many viewers motivated and moving. Getting someone started is just the first step though. Keeping them going and helping them stick with a good exercise and nutrition program long enough to personally experience positive and healthy results is the biggest challenge. And the key to keeping people going strong is mostly about mindset — we have to help them stay positive and feel good about their progress and results.

In the real world, burning off 2 lbs of unhealthy bodyfat a week is something you should be very proud to accomplish. But for millions of viewers of weight-loss TV shows, 2 lbs of fat loss a week seems like a failure and reinforces the false belief that far too many have, which is that they can’t be successful at transforming their health. But the fact, they CAN! Just because it doesn’t happen at the pace you see on weight-loss TV shows, doesn’t mean it’s not working for you and that you’re not on your way to an incredible transformation.

At my Transformation Center in Colorado, we’ve helped dozens of people become over 100 lbs lighter in less than a year. The average weight-loss for someone who is getting great results from their exercise and healthy eating program is 8 to 12 lbs per month (not per week!). I like to see my clients reducing their overall weight by 1% to 1.25% per week until we hit a healthy goal weight. Losing weight faster than that almost certainly means that your body is sacrificing muscle mass (and also bone density). When we lose muscle, the metabolism goes down and we become less efficient at burning calories and producing energy. It takes a smart plan, followed consistently, to lose bodyfat while strengthening muscles and improving energy.

Conclusion

It’s an unfortunate ‘reality’ that so much of what is published in magazines, broadcast on television, and written on the internet is complete and utter bullsh*t when it comes to diet, exercise, and fitness. In 25+ years as an author, teacher, and coach, I’ve seen countless fads and frauds come and go. What I’ve been able to conclude — what stands out as the fundamental facts to me — is that each of us have an incredible, God-given ability to restore our health, rebuild our bodies, and renew our lives that can’t be bought, can’t be sold, and can never be taken away.

Even if you’ve neglected your health for years, even decades, that power to change your health — the power to transform your life — is still right there where it’s always been… within you.

Yes, you need accurate information, scientific facts, and a knowledgeable coach, trainer, or mentor who can point you in the right direction and help you steer clear of the nonsense, pitfalls, and obstacles. And yes, reclaiming the healthy body and life that you were meant to have all along will take sacrifice, effort, and determination… but the rewards you’ll earn, no matter how long it takes, will be more than worth it!

As you can see from Bruce’s ‘before photo’ he has completely transformed his health, losing over 60 lbs. of bodyfat while gaining strength and energy. He did it with smart exercise, good nutrition, and the enthusiastic support of his Camp community and friends.

Bill Phillips Transformation Camp Successfully Finishes its 2-Year Run of Sold Out Events~

We have just this weekend’s Super 3-Day Camp to enjoy and then our two year project wraps up. With 37 Sold Out Camps and over 1,100 participants all total, the Transformation Camp Project went above and beyond my highest expectations for it! What an incredible experience it has been meeting and getting to know so many wonderful people, from all walks of life, who literally came from all corners of our world, with one thing in common: the desire to be healthier and to improve.

I never imagined this project would be so fun and enjoyable! It was also an honor and pleasure to be your teacher for the time you spent here. We shared a lot of laughter and some tears; good food and great workouts; we talked face to face about the challenges life brings our way; the mistakes we’ve made; and we helped each other find strength inside of us that many didn’t even know was there. In our speaking circles, I saw so much courage, I heard so much truth, I felt so much real, authentic, heart centered emotion. I was deeply touched and inspired by the strength and resiliency of the human spirit of our camp participants. And, I was stunned, over and over again, by the magnitude of the changes I saw camp participants make in the weeks after they went home and put their new knowledge into action. The power we each have to transform our lives in beyond measure.

I said two years ago when I started the camp series that it would be life changing. I know that intention has come to pass because it has absolutely changed mine… much more than I could have ever hoped for.  I am healthier, happier, more aware, and maybe even a little wiser than I was before. Camp has been a blessing. I have a beautiful and bright wife, Maria, and we have an exciting and inspiring life and future thanks to Transformation Camp. I have connected, in meaningful ways, with people from all over the world who have helped me learn so much about life and living.

THANK YOU so much to each person who traveled to Transformation Center and who gave me the special opportunity to share my knowledge and some of my over-flowing passion and enthusiasm for fitness with you! And thank you to all the volunteers, the workers, and to all our guest speakers for helping me so much — your efforts made a real and positive difference in the lives of many, including mine. For this, I am forever grateful and wish you the best of health always as your journey through life moves forward and continues to unfold.

I am diving into my next projects now; one of which is writing a book about what I learned and realized through my time at Transformation Center. The stories I have selected to share in the book will inspire you, teach you, uplift you, make you smile, and most of all… help you discover and believe in your own incredible power and ability to make stunning changes in your body and life!

I am also expanding our Right Nutraceuticals line of products and I am going to finally finish the new version of my website at Transformation.com which is all about how others have transformed their bodies and how YOU can do it too! I will keep you posted on these new and exciting endeavors which I hope will be as rewarding, inspiring, and fun as my two years at Transformation Camp!

An Embarrassing Confession I Wish I Didn’t Have to Make

This is an Embarrassing Story to Tell, But if it Helps Someone Else get Back on Track with their Health, it will be Worth it to me. So here goes

Okay… let’s see. There are two photos of me posted along with my words. The photo on the right is me today, age 49. On the Left is ME in pretty bad condition, 2 years ago. In the summer of 2011 I had brutal accident which required emergency surgery and which put me in the hospital, then a wheelchair, then in a hospital bed at home for months. Just like everybody else, with inactivity and too much comfort food (ice cream is an incredible pain killer), I lost so much of my muscle and I gained fat… and I aged fast. I was so embarrassed and just literally in tears (inactivity and depression go hand in hand). But I knew what to do to pull out of the tailspin. Two years ago this month (in the Autumn of 2011 at age 47), I decided to completely change and rebuild my body and life.

I developed an new, inspiring vision for my future and transformed it into steps and stages… monthly, weekly, and daily goals were set and met. I created a new, positive environment and got support from true friends. Of course I had to completely change my eating and work hard in the weight room to rebuild my strength. I put my heart and soul into it and applied the key knowledge I have learned over the years… I put it to work very enthusiastically in my own life. I will tell the complete story and give my exact workout and nutrition and supplement program in an upcoming blog on my site BillPhillipsNews.com — watch for the whole story a week from today.

For now I can tell you this: I am more grateful for a healthy and strong body now than I EVER was before! I am grateful to be pain free and alive. My life has changed even more than my body since the devastating accident I had back in 2011. I wouldn’t go back and change any of it if I could because it has all been an edifying, humbling (although very embarrassing) and transformative experience. I have a new life today… a beautiful and smart and incredible wife now and a new fitness business which allows me to put my passion for fitness to work everyday!

I tell my students and clients today what I learned painfully and personally… we all respond the same way to inactivity and over eating… I am just like you. And you are just like me in that when you start working out and eating right and you follow a smart plan, your body will reward you with incredible changes and renewed health!

I’ve been there… I know what it is like to be stuck in a body that is in pain and not doing what you want it to. It nearly broke my spirit and I nearly threw in the towel and blamed it all on aging and being over the hill. But I snapped out of it one day and said ‘F+#@ This! I am not settling for this! I AM GOING TO GET MY BODY AND LIFE BACK ON TRACK!’ And that is what I did and what I am doing… I will continue to get leaner and stronger and healthier each month… I will never have a final ‘After photo’… I will have a lot of Progress Photos which show the steady results of hard and humble work aimed at helping me improve my body and mind more each day. And finally, let me tell you this…

Don’t be surprised if what feels like your greatest adversity today becomes your biggest blessing two years from now… that is what happened for me and I thank God each day for helping me wake up to LIFE again!!

You can’t be both a Before and After Picture at the Same Time

To transform your body and life, you have to want to change more than you want to stay the same.

One of the interesting contradictions of life is that we want to change, and yet at some level, we want to stay the same. But you can’t do both. Clearly, you can’t be a before photo and an after photo at the same time. Every single success story I have seen is created by the person wanting to change more than they wanted to stay the same. Sometimes people were absolutely at the end of their ropes — their health failing, their relationships suffering, their lives falling apart. Other times, people wanted to change because they knew that their lives could be even better.

Inspiration or desperation — whatever your reasons are for wanting to change, please don’t lose sight of them! If at some point during the 12 weeks you think of quitting, carefully read the reasons why you began… that can keep you going strong!
